Carolyn Mawle

I graduated from Norwich School of Art and Design with a BA (Hons) in Visual Studies in 2003, completed a PGCE the following year & have been teaching secondary textiles since, the last 8 years to permanently excluded young people.

Throughout this time I have developed my own creative practice, particularly in jewellery making. I am fascinated by the possibilities posed by beads and beading and the beauty of natural stones. I taught myself the Japanese braiding technique (kumihimo) and love the texture and fluidity of beaded braids.

Beaded kumihimo is a relatively new craft, I believe the way I complete the braid is unique, using a splicing technique like traditional rope work. This is more aesthetically pleasing than using an end cap and one that does not rely on glue for strength.

I gain pleasure from combining semi precious gemstones used as a focal point, together with the beaded kumihimo using the best quality Japanese beads to create beautiful, one of a kind pieces.
