John Mathieson
I discovered clay at an evening class in London, began teaching pottery and art at secondary level one year later, and have since taken a degree in ceramics.
I now make individual pieces and some domestic ware in stoneware and porcelain on a slow Leach kick wheel. Work is fired to 1280C. In agas kiln using ash, tenmoku, talc and shinzo glazes, often over slip. I have also worked extensively in slipware and raku - I am the author of Raku published by A&C Black in their Ceramics Handbooks series.
I want my work to continue to evolve, and to show the marks of the maker's hands. Beyond that it has to speak for itself. I am a qualified teacher with many years experience in schools. Currently teaching adult classes at Caroline Chisholm School, Northampton.
